Carrot and stick is a method of training pets. You give them treats when they're good and you punish them when they step out of line.

[Rude's actually flipping through some other Pokedex entries and boy, is he shocked. How did something so small suddenly grow into something so huge!? Looking up the evolution for Wartotle leads to Blastoise, and the pre-evolution is Squirtle.

He might get himself one of those.]
